1 Ingredients
| Qty | Item |
|---|---|
| 1 cup | Steel cut oats |
| 3.5 cups | Water |
| 2 large | Apples, peeled and diced |
| 1 tsp | Ground cinnamon |
| 0.25 tsp | Ground nutmeg |
| 0.25 tsp | Kosher salt |
| 2 tbsp | Pure maple syrup |
| 1 tsp | Pure vanilla extract |
| 1 tsp | Butter or coconut oil |
2 Instructions
Lightly grease the inside of your slow cooker with butter or coconut oil to prevent the oats from sticking to the sides.
Add the steel cut oats, water, diced apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and maple syrup into the slow cooker insert.
Stir all the ingredients well to ensure the spices and sweetener are evenly distributed.
Cover with the lid and set the slow cooker to cook on LOW for 7 to 8 hours. This is best done overnight.
In the morning, turn off the slow cooker and remove the lid. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Give the oats a vigorous stir to incorporate any excess liquid and break up the softened apples into the porridge.
Serve warm, topped with extra milk, chopped nuts, or a drizzle of honey if desired.
๐ก Tips & Tricks
-
ยท
For the best texture, use firm apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji so they do not completely disintegrate.
-
ยท
To make cleaning even easier, use a slow cooker liner or a heavy coating of non-stick spray.
-
ยท
If the oats are too thick in the morning, simply whisk in a splash of warm milk or water until you reach your desired consistency.
-
ยท
If you have a very hot-running slow cooker, consider using a timer to cook for 7 hours instead of 8 to prevent burning on the edges.
